The popcorn machine – a popular snack maker

Popcorns, is basically corn maize which expands from its kernel and puffs it up when it’s heated. The popcorns are able to pop up because of its kernels that have a hard hull which is completely moisture sealed and a dense starchy interior. Due to this pressure is built up inside the kernel until an explosive “pop “sounds come. Now a day some of the corn are cultivated specifically for making of popcorns termed as popping corns. Each kernel of the popcorn contains some amount of moisture and oil. The outer hull of the kernel of the popcorn is very strong and impervious to the moisture.

As the oil and the water are heated past their boiling point, the moisture in the kernel is turned up into a superheated pressurized steam. Due to this, the starch inside the kernel softens and becomes pliable. The pressure in the container continues to increase until the breaking point of the hull is achieved. This pressure is about 135 psi (930 kPa) and the temperature is around 180 °C (356 °F). At this condition, the hull ruptures rapidly, resulting in the pressure drop inside the kernel and resulting in a corresponding rapid expansion of the steam. This results in the expansion of starch and the proteins into airy foam. As the foam cools down rapidly, the starch and protein polymers present form into the much known crispy puff. There are few special varieties which are grown so as to give better popping yield. The popcorn machine uses the same principle.

There are varieties of popcorn machine are available in the market for commercial as well as personal (home) use. Different sizes and shapes are also available. Such machines are easier, faster and cheaper to use.
